Battlestar Galatica Merchandise Poster reminds us women are the enemy
Dear Patriarchy
I remember when you were young, hip and subtle. This? Not so subtle.
Given the rest of Quantum Mechanix posters are heavily stylized, and this is the only photo realistic one in the set, and the only one in the set to feature a female figure, it don’t take much to get the other message being sent here. Women are bad, Battlestar Galactica told me so. This is from an official merchandiser for the Battlestar Galactica series as well, so it’s quality assured Patriarchy Produce.
What’s also missing from the poster set is the recognition of the existence of Kara Starbuck. You want to tell me that the ace hotshot pilot in the fleet isn’t a recruiting mechanism worthy of their own poster? Especially as merchandise to sell to the fanbase of the TV series?

Oh, come on. This is just playing off the “loose lips sink ships” genre of these posters (like http://faculty.umf.maine.edu/~walters/web%20104/ww2poster%20female%20spy.jpg or http://faculty.umf.maine.edu/~walters/web%20104/ww2%20poster%20female%20danger.jpg). She’s just the most recognizable cylon on the show. I don’t see misogyny lurking behind the concept. But you’re right, Starbuck as Rosie the Riveter would have been a good addition.

I actually have to go with Nedra on this one, pretty much across the board. I mean, YES there is misogyny there, but it is directly traceable to the wwii propaganda posters it is riffing off. I do also agree with a Starbuck poster as a pitch though!

“I mean, YES there is misogyny there, but it is directly traceable to the wwii propaganda posters it is riffing off.”
Wait, so misogyny that’s riffed off someone else’s misogyny is totally fine? I must’ve missed that memo. Who knew that copying a concept somehow rendered it non-existent?
Seriously though, no one’s saying they came up with the sexism all on their own, but copied sexism is still sexism unless you quote/reference and argue against in whatever way. And I’m just not seeing the irony here.
And honestly, if you’re going to go with the ‘anyone could be a cylon’, Boomer seems the more obvious choice given her position in the fleet (though I’ll grant that if the target is folks who haven’t seen the series, Boomer’s a bad choice for spoiler reasons, but I tend to see this sort of product as having a target market who’s seen the show rather than as actual promotion).
