Links Round Up Friday

Or, content that didn’t fit anywhere else, and a reason to queue up comments since I’m away for the weekend…

Any comics I should be reading this season? Or comics blogs I should pick up on the Google reader?

Post Case Analysis: Reflections on the Project Girl Wonder milestone

Friday, February 8th, 2008

I spent over $100 on a single DC comics buying spree after the case appeared. Plus, I put Robin and Batman onto Jen’s regular list (should really get my own, but she’s got the bigger regular comics order) to go with the Booster Gold and Blue Beetle. I may yet get the whole BatFranchise into the list. It’ll depend how they go in terms of building on the goodwill gained from the Steph case.

Do I think it’s over? I’m not even convinced Project Girl Wonder is over until the case is mainstream continuity (or what passes for continuity at DC). It’s a panel of hope, of optimism, of future promise and that’s the beginning. Maintaining the support for DC to encourage them to deliver on the promise is key here – walking away would be a fools gold victory.

Do I feel like gloating? Oh hell yeah. I do recall being told quite bluntly that Steph would never have a case, and should never have a case.

Batman 673 proved those people to be poor judges of the future, and even worse judges of the goal of Project Girl Wonder.

Do I think that the battle for decent gender portrayals in comic books has been won? No. There’s a long road to travel here, and there’s still much work to be done.

Batman 673 is a milestone.  It’s the first point where we can point to a mission objective (Case for Steph), and point to a real life comic book panel with the case.  It’s a result that’s tangible.

It’s worth celebrating as we step up once more to keep the momentum going. After all, we’ve had the validation that DC is willing to listen, and we’ve seen the proof, and from here, it’s a matter of continuing to move forwar.

It’s the 21st century. Anything’s possible.
