One of many voices that speak out against problems of the portrayal of gender, sexuality and race in comics. I just happen to be a male, white middle class member of the primary comic book target demographic.

"Neithe rof the big two are gonna “build it” to “get them to come” you have to get them to come in order to make it worthwhile for them to build it."

Minx comics. DanDiDio asking for female readers to read the Supergirl comic. Sounds suspiciously like something being built there.

"You know its funny, for a guy with a PHd in marketing you dont seem to get that all your efforts are directed at the wrong place."

There are multiple campaigns in process, and this is one of them, and it's the one I'm working on, so it's the one I'll be commenting on. If I was working for "Operation Expanding Marketshare" I'd be writing about it. The profile raising of the campaign is the beginning, it's where people realise that there are readers of comics who aren't just young men, and then, as I point out above, later in the process, there will be the quid pro quo exchange. When we're at the deal making and swapping content for market share, and trading volume and dollars, then it'll be a question of negotiating what the Comic Book Companies want in exchange for tuning up the content (ps, it's more than direct to market sales that are on offer. Branding, product repositioning, enhanced credibility of the 4 colour story telling device.)

"You really wanna effect change? get more women to buy comics."
That's the *long term* goal. I'm glad to see you agreeing with me again. Part of the ways and means of delivering on that is to raise the awareness that women are an audience right now. Which basically, is the purpose of this operation.

Hey, even Ghandhi wasn't about being passive as in just taking it without a fight. My understanding is he used non-violent tactics, but the strategy had a lot to do with non-compliance/general strike type stuff, which is always so threatening because it's a violence against the social order itself. But again, I suppose the closest analogy to all sitting down in the street here is just standing firm where we are, the place where Girls Read Comics and They're Pissed. (And doing it in letters, at cons, etc. etc.) ^_~

This ought to be publicized widely for all of the naysayers. And as for the yaysayers like myself, it's great encouragement. Thanks.

You know its funny, for a guy with a PHd in marketing you dont seem to get that all your efforts are directed at the wrong place. See it doesnt matter what stage your strategy is at, or how loudly you shout from the rooftops, as long as women are less than 1 out of every ten comic book buyers, they dont matter. Period.
You really wanna effect change? get more women to buy comics.

Today being another one of those times.
