Questions for male comic book bloggers who wrote about the MJ statue

May 21, 2007, Filed under: Core Posts, Marketing — @ 9:54 pm

I’m interested in talking to male bloggers who posted criticism or negative reviews about the Mary-Jane Watson statue, and the responses they received to their posts. I’d like to hear/read your opinion of how people reacted to what you had to say, types of commentary/feedback you received,  and volume of commentary/feedback on the issue.   If you have links to the posts you’d like to contribute that’d be helpful as well.
Drop me a line at designatedsidekick@gmail.com - if you want confidentiality or post up to the comments.

This is a rapid fire, non scientific approach for me to get some shared experience from fellow male comic book bloggers.  From one male blogger to another, I want to swap notes on the incident, and people’s responses to your posts.

  1. I don’t recall getting any negative posts. And of the people who responded on their own journals, all but 1 were in agreement with the general consensus. Only 1 (a male) had a “its just cheesecake, get over it) response. Worst I got in response was one person calling me a porn addict on a blog that linked to me…

Right now LJ is apparantly down so I can’t do dig up links…

  2. Actually I received no trolling or hostile responses at all, which I remarked about in a few places and I was the second link in the WFA page. I was wondering if it is because I am male.

  3. Well to be honest I did not get much of a reaction. I was however delighted and honored to have my post syndicated by When Fangirls Attack. Plus I got the singular honor of being called a cult member by the uber troll known as the rational mad man. I feel special. X-* Heres the url for my post. http://1afinerworld.blogspot.com/2007/05/jumping-on-bandwagon-regarding-mary.html

  4. @lurkerwithout. I’m really glad to have heard from you on this - I’m friends with Betty, and I saw the reaction she got from being in the same article.

@Sleestak. I’ve been wondering that as well. I think your post was the trigger point for me to ask the question.

@Toriach. I just have to say your comments of “…” to RMM was one of the most priceless lines I’ve seen in these debates. You think it’s my Ratty who’s also RMM?

  5. Well, I dunno. From what I seen, male posters who spoke out against the statue didn’t catch half as flack as female posters who did. But I dunno if it’s indicative of a pattern, seeing as I’ve only seen one or two of males posters and about a handful of female posters discuss the subject.

So yeah, take that from what you will.

  6. @Benel G
I know, that’s why I’ve got this call out. I was thinking that DS just plain wasn’t well known enough to pick up any direct flack or traffic from coming out against the statue. Then I looked at the experience of LurkerWithout (in the newspaper articles) and Sleestak (second spot on WFA), and started to wonder if this was actually a pattern.

I mean, there’s two things - one is whether we’re being ignored by the counter-push male bloggers, or whether there were enough male bloggers who posted comment for this to have been on the radars of the statue supporters.
I seriously don’t know, which is why I’m asking around.

  7. I only got the one comment, and it was positive. And it was from my best friend.

I thought that was weird, considering the response the known female bloggers received, and I’m glad I’m not the only one who considered the same conclusions.

  8. @Will
I’m trying not to draw conclusions. That said, all the time the conclusions are standing in front of the camera lenses and posing, it’s not that hard to get a clear picture of them. (Captain metaphor to the rescue!)

Maybe I should implement of [MALEBLOGGER] tag on my posts for the WFA index.

  9. Hi, saw your post here: http://www.girl-wonder.org/designatedsidekick/2007/05/21/questions-for-male-comic-book-bloggers-who-wrote-about-the-mj-statue/#comments
and figured I’d drop you a line. I had a post that both agrees and disagrees with the point here: http://www.4thletter.net/?p=487 , and the response ranged from negative to positive, as you can see in the comments thread. I don’t know of off-site chatter, but the links I”ve seen have been generally positive, as well.

May not be what you’re looking for, but it’s worth noting, I guess?

  10. @David

Actually, it precisely what I was looking for - thank you.

  11. I was late to the figurine game. I found out about it after it was dying down. I posted about it on a regular forum and now it looks like it is, sigh, heating up. The biggest responses I get are “I don’t see what the problem is with it.” It hasn’t really expanded much beyond that but it seems perfectly clear, few people seem willing to speak up on the problems with it.

  12. While I recieved no posts about it in LJ, I did discuss it with others. One person was just basically giving me BINGO answers. Another felt doubt because it was his opinion that the outrage was begun by at least one blogger who had an ulterior motive: bashing the MJ statue in order to promote their own literary work. A third person was concerned just on the basis that they felt that coming down on the statuette smacked of shades of censorship. So a variety of negative responses. Hope that’s helpful. :}

  13. And duh, I forgot another thing.

I’m a mod at SomethingAwful.com’s “Batman’s Shameful Secret” subforum, i.e., the comics forum. We’ve got a thread on the statue, and sexism in general, here, though you may need to be logged in to see it.

It’s been remarkably even, with both sides (as it were, i’m loathe to bring dualism into play) bringing their A-game to the argument at hand. Valid points have been made all around.
